Design Technology
Design and Technology (D&T) is an inspiring, rigorous and practical subject. Here at St Michael's, D&T is taught across all phases in school from Foundation Stage to Year Six. D&T draws on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) subjects, but also encompasses elements of Art and Computing. The teaching of D&T has a topic-based approach, so the subject is versatile, and can be taught cross-curricular with other subjects. D&T provides children with great opportunities to demonstrate creativity, ingenuity and innovation. Children are taught about famous designers from the past and present and learn how these designers have changed the world.
In our D&T lessons, we teach children to design, plan, make and evaluate their designs. Through the evaluation stage, children are encouraged to think critically about their design and then they are given the opportunity to improve their product. This instils our Rainbow Value of Perseverence, but children also simultaneously learn how to solve real and relevant problems.
